The Mary Ann Johnson

Area 2N AYSO Soccer Memorial Scholarship

Background

In honor of Mary Ann Johnson, the first woman Regional Commissioner of the Hillsborough American Youth Soccer Organization (AYSO), the Mary Ann Johnson Area 2N AYSO Soccer Memorial Scholarship has been established by her husband, Andrew Johnson and his four sons, Andrew, Peter, Cyrus, and David.  Mary Ann always gave 200% in everything she did.  'Truth, Justice and The American Way' really meant something to her.  She was always for the underdog, under privileged and the oppressed.  She always seemed to end up running every organization in which she became involved because she worked harder than anyone else and because everyone trusted her.  Mary Ann earned many tributes and awards for her enthusiastic community service and aid to charities. As her husband summed it up, "Focusing on others was her top priority, especially if they had special needs."

Mary Ann Johnson was the Regional Commissioner for AYSO Region 110-Hillsborough for 1987 and 1988.  She was instrumental in establishing AYSO as a premier organization for children and families in the Hillsborough community.  During the soccer season, Mary Ann could be found on the soccer fields refereeing many of the games and was easily identifiable in her black tam and referee uniform.  With her encouragement and hard work, the foundation for Region 110's strong AYSO program was built.  Today, AYSO Region 110 in Hillsborough has 1120 players, 490 of whom are girls.  Mary Ann Johnson was an inspiration to the program and all those who had the opportunity to know her.  Her husband and four sons were all active in the Hillsborough AYSO program as players, referees and/or coaches.

To acknowledge the importance of AYSO to his late wife, Andrew Johnson and his four sons, Andrew, Peter, Cyrus and David, have established a $10,000 college scholarship in Mary Ann's name to be renewed each year and to be awarded annually to a girl involved in AYSO in Area 2N.  The scholarship winner need not be a great soccer player.  She should be involved in her school, her church or local community, hospital, etc.  Hopefully, she will have some of Mary Ann's approach to life; helping others, a good sense of humor, and a zest for life. The winner will be selected from applications submitted to Mr. Johnson and his four sons.
